“Well, Lily, my name’s Alex. How did you end up here?”
She hesitated, then spoke in a halting voice. “I… I ran away. I got scared, and your door was open, so I hid.”
I nodded, trying to process her words. The thought of this little girl wandering alone at night made my heart ache. “Let’s get you out of there, okay? You must be hungry.”
Slowly, Lily crawled out from beneath the bed, her eyes never leaving mine. Murphy immediately moved to her side, nuzzling her gently. I smiled, grateful for his instinctive kindness.
“You’re safe now, Lily,” I assured her. “Let’s get you something to eat and figure out how to get you back home.”
As she stood up, I realized that this unexpected encounter was far from the nightmare I’d imagined. Instead, it was the beginning of a journey—one that would lead to answers, understanding, and, hopefully, a happy ending for Lily.
