The couple had lived for many years in a small town divided by a wild river. Once, an old bridge had been built over it, but it had long since fallen into disrepair. Still, people sometimes used it to take a shortcut.

That day, the man and the woman decided to cross the bridge. The boards creaked under their feet, the rotten beams groaned threateningly. Beneath them the river roared — the current was so strong that even experienced swimmers could easily drown in it.
