shaking her head as if to dispel a memory that had haunted her for too long. “Sorry doesn’t change the past, Miles. It doesn’t change what happened.”

He nodded slowly, acknowledging the truth in her words. “I know. And I don’t expect forgiveness. But I need you to know—I never stopped thinking about you. About what I did.”

She looked at him, really looked at him, for the first time since he’d called her name. There was a sincerity in his eyes that hadn’t been there years ago, a depth she didn’t recall. But sincerity was not enough to bridge the chasm between them.
